From Queens to Kings

Happy Monday! We hope your weekend was fun! We had to catch up on work, and get our new bed set up, so it was good in a dorky way, not in a fun way. Hopefully in the next week I can get out of bed a bit more and start enjoying this pregnancy! iTunes and me have become besties and I just keep renting and renting movies to keep me sane. Speaking of keeping sane, our Queen mattress on a King frame situation is officially over. I feel very much less white trash this week than I did last week. Bye-bye frumpy looking sad situation!

DIY Bed, build a bed, tufted bed, extra large headboard, dwell studio sheets, pillar

bed frame, tufted bed, diy bed, build a bed, built a bed, grainsack upholstered bed, bedinabox

Joey (my hero), did most of the setting up because I am basically useless right now. He cleared off the old Queen mattress (there was no box spring) and left the bed looking like the day we finished building it.

how delivers, how mattress comes bedinabox, how to, pacbamboo, king pacbamboo

Our bed showed up in a kinda uneventful looking way. The big white poof is the mattress and the box next to it is there version of a boxspring. I am not going to lie – I was feeling a little ripped off.

bedinabox boxspring, boxspring, bed in a box frame

Joey got to work on the boxspring, which was an additional $350 for the King. It took him about a half hour to fully assemble. The picture above is flipped up-side-down. The reason we opted for their boxspring thing is because I was scared the mattress would eventually sag through our DIY bedframe’s slots.

bedinabox,, bedinabox boxspring how to, king

This is what the boxspring looks like covered in the provided fabric. Starting to look like a bed! Eh, eh? Now I know the most interesting part of this whole purchase is how that white bag turns into a full blown King mattress you actually want to sleep on. Well, photos don’t tell the story – so we made a little video to give you the full experience. Hold tight, we will post soon!

pacbamboo,, bedinabox, tall bed, diy bed, tufted headboard, orla kiely,

And here is what we have! A SUPER tall bed (I am going to need to get some steps to get in and out of this thing!) It’s a 8″ boxspring and a 13″ mattress on top of the bed frame. Yep. All 5’2 of me is basically in standing position when my feel slide to the floor. Not good for nausea.

So here is the full break down of the Pro’s:

  • Totally easy set up
  • Not too much waste (boxes, plastic, bags, etc..)
  • Don’t really need tools
  • We saved over $1,000 (!!!) compared to identical mattresses
  • It’s so cozy and amazing feeling
  • Quick shipping
  • Much higher quality than we expected

And with the good, comes the bad (not too much bad):

  • I was panicing when we put the mattress on the bed because it looked lumpy and uneven for a good 45 minutes. It evened out – I just wish we had warning to expect that.
  • There was this kinda chemical/foam smell that’s pretty strong and the first night I got a headache. Night two it faded a bit.
  • This is more our fault than anyone else – the bed is TALL! It’s a long way down, don’t fall!

All that’s left to do now is get a duvet and blankets that actually fit the bed properly. I want know about your mattress! We have been mattress obsessed for over a year now, hunting and researching like nutty people on the hunt for the perfect one. It’s a wonder we wound up ordering one online before even testing it.  Anyone else out there do that?

I’ve been considering getting a stepstool to put next to my bed- I have a ::low:: frame and it still feels like i have to pole vault into it! How do your pups like the new bed? Do they need a stepstool too? And one more question… are those POCKETS in the “wings” of your headboard? Because that’d be genius.

    • Joey & Lana says:

hey linz! the pups have been sleeping downstairs for months, i can’t handle their smell. it’s been painful mentally. as for the pocket, why yes. thanks for noticing. we built the bed….to my specifications. panic button built in, computer pocket, and all.

  2. Kerry says:

The finished product looks so chic, it will be totally worth having to climb steps to get in/out. =)

  3. Tricia says:

Our king mattress was way too high with a box spring too, so we returned it and got two twin bunkie boards (thin boards meant for bunk beds) Works like a charm and cheaper than the box spring. Plus I can actually get in our bed! :). FYI in case you decide the bed is really too high.

  4. […] had some time to sleep on the bed and are ready to dish the dirt. It’s pretty perfect and everything we said it was before, except one thing. Joey doesn’t notice it as much as I do, but the smell of the bed, which […]

  5. Staci says:

I was searching for a headboard and came across your site. Did you build that yourself? Where can i get info on the headboard? Your bed looks beautiful!!!!

    • Joey & Lana says:

thanks for stopping by! we did build it from wood at the lumber yard and them upholstered it. thanks for the kind words!

  6. joy says:

If the bed is too high and you made the frame, why don’t you adjust the frame to make the box spring lower in there? Since you’ve had the bed for a while now, how do you like it? Does it get saggy? Does it still smell? Thanks!

    • Lana Katsaros says:

hi joy! the bed has been holding strong! we both love it and it has not sagged and that smell went away and stayed away after a few nights – maybe a week. i would say we would suggest it to a friend so far – hopefully it holds up like the expensive ones!

  11. Jim Strickland says:

We bought our queen size PacBamboo in January 2011. We have absolutely loved it ever since. I feel for you on the height. At 5’10”, I sometimes have to get a little hop going to get solidly on the bed. I was worried that, living in Memphis, the mattress would be too hot in the summer, what with extremely high heat and humidity. However, that has not been the case. The mattress is comfortable year round.

We bought a king pacbamboo. There was a slight initial Odor but after 2 weeks it seems to have disappeared. We are replacing a luxury pillow top mattress spring mattress. I was worried it wouldn’t be firm enough it is very firm firmer then our last mattress. My husband was very skeptical about the type of mattress and it being delivered in a small box. He loves it so much that he comments that it is so comfortable every night before bed! We are very satisfied all around. I am so glad we took the risk of ordering the bedinabox. This blog was the final deciding factor after reading sleep like the dead reviews.

  21. Kat says:

Hello! I am buying a mattress from a bed in a box tomorrow….question, when you removed the box spring, did the mattress sag? Can you buy any bed frame with the mattress?

    • Ayisha says:

She may not answer you question but I can. It’s no different than an normal spring mattress. The Bed in A Box PacBamboo is made to feel more like a traditional spring mattress so it does not have the deep sunken in feeling that you normally get with the Tempurpedic beds. My husband and I bought the king sized and it was delivered on December 31, 2013. Love life is perfectly intact. 🙂

I’m really interested in purchasing a bedinabox, but I’m wondering if it is still holding up for you. I know that some times a mattress will start to lose comfort after a year or so.

    • Nemie says:

I purchased the PacBed from bedinabox. I purchased it about 3 years ago, 11/10/12. I still love it! It is definitely worth every penny. The price has come down at bit.

Additionally, I had an old box spring that was amish-made and works perfectly fine for this mattress. I couldn’t see paying the extra expense for a bed frame.

      Best wishes!

  26. Oh I wanted to have that also, a super tall bed. I will ask my parents to buy all those things so I can have one.

If you were concerned about your mattress finding its way through the slats, you could have just laid 3/4″ plywood on top of the slats in picture #2 from the top, thus creating a firm, solid base for your mattress that would not have added significantly to the overall height of the bed. That way you wouldn’t have needed a ladder to climb in and out of bed.
