Health! It’s been a hot topic around here (and the world!) lately. We have been working on some educational material for Atlas that is in line what the world around him. The big question is, “Why do I have to wash my hands so much?”. So we decided to make a lesson plan around this. We started with a chat about germs and did an online lesson about how germs work and once they get into your body, what happens next.

Then I found some really amazing FREE human body / anatomy materials online (link at bottom of post). I was able to find a downloadable skeleton, downloadable organs (with and with out labels). We paired these free grade school friendly anatomy downloads with a really great and detailed human body book. Ours came with a big colorful poster and does a really great job with graphics and explanations.

So, what do you need to gather for this? We used a butcher paper roll to have Atlas lay down on to trace him, a printer and paper to print the free materials, scissors, glue stick, curiosity and be prepared for poop jokes.

Depending on where you child is as far as fine motor skills and knowledge of the human body, this can really work for any level. We had to spend a couple years to get the scissor ability to were it is today. If that’s your goal, these huge and oddly shaped organs and bones may be good practice. Check with your occupational therapist and see what they think.

Before we put things in the correct spot, we let atlas take a guess. I love how he took the shape of the stomach to pair with his shoulder and connected it to the kidneys. He was so surprised that’s not how our bodies are set up.

How to make a life size skeleton!

  1. Trace your body

  2. Guess where all your organs go!

  3. Correct any wrong organ placement

  4. Glue down your organs

  5. Place the bones over the organs how you think they go! Make some peek holes in the ribs and skull and cut the ribs exactly in half to make doors (don’t glue down all the way) to peek inside

  6. Give your skeleton a name!

Say “Hello” to RAHONIE!

Here is a peek and the book and poster we used to. I would say this book is a tool you can use over and over again as the human body lessons start to get more complex. Each section can be easily broken down into it’s own lesson.

Now! Here is where I found all the free material!
